The Nordictrack GX 5.0 recumbent bike is one of the more popular bikes in the Nordictrack lineup.
They’ve kept it around for about 3 years now – which tells you how popular it is as Nordictrack usually retires their bikes if they don’t sell well.
You get a sleek, super-detailed console window that’s backlit and easy to read, iFit LIVE (which wirelessly connects to the Internet to download new workouts, track your workout stats and more), 24 resistance levels and a heavier, more stable base than previous models.
The step-through design makes it easy to get on and off the bike. And the enhanced flywheel gives you a more smooth-feeling ride.
Is it a good value for you? Here’s what you need to know:

Strengths of the Nordictrack GX 5.0 Pro Recumbent Cycle:
iFit LIVE
This is a very cool technology that uses the wireless internet in your home to connect your bike to the Internet. It then uses Googlepas to let you map out any trail you want in the world. (You can also choose premapped trails as well).
You can also download new workouts by Jillian Michaels (where she coaches you through the workout) and track your workout stats and nutrition online. This can help you go further and reach your goals much quicker than with a standard bike.
Large 5″ Backlit Conhsole
This console on this bike is incredible – and superior to a lot of bikes at this price point. It’s larger than many bikes at this price point at 5 inches across. It’s also easy to read from any angle.
There’s a racetrack display so you can easily track you speed, pace and distance with the visual, quarter-mile racetrack. And you can view your stats like speed, time, distance, resistance, pulse and calories burned.
24 Resistance Levels
This is a good number of resistance levels – especially at this price point. So there’s no worry about topping out after you’ve had the bike for 4 months.
30 Built-In Workouts
In addition to the iFit LIVE workouts, the GX 5.0 bike also comes with 30 built-in workouts. These give you even more variety. The workouts target calorie-burning and aerobic goals. Your speed, time, distance and resistance are preset, so all you have to do is press Start and go.
iPod Dock With Speakers
Plug your iPod or mp3 player into the console and listen to your favorite tunes through the console speakers. This alone can make your workouts more enjoyable and go by much faster.
Hand Grip Heart Rate Monitor
Stay in your target fat-burning zone with the hand grip heart rate monitor on the side handlebars. The bike is also compatible to use with a wireless heart rate monitor, which many people find to be more accurate.
Step-Through Design
The GX5.0 bike comes with an easy step-through design. So you’re not struggling over the base to get on the bike when you workout. It’s much easier to get on and off the bike with this design.
Weaknessess of the Nordictrack 5.0 Pro Recumbent Cycle:
Be aware that while iFit LIVE gives you a ton of options, you do have to purchase an iFit LIVE module to use it (about $99 as of this writing). You can still use the bike without iFit – you just won’t be able to do all the neat stuff the iFit gives you.
Also, the console is easy to read – but not as large as other models like the VR Commercal 25.
Bottom Line?
The Nordic Track GX 5.0 Recumbent Pro Cycle is a great little recumbent that gives you a lot of fun options for an incredible price. You can download new workouts, plug in and play your iPod, or take advantage of the workouts that are already built in.
Plus you get a bike that is easily adjustable – so you can move the seat and adjust it to fit your body. You also get some good lumbar support with the padded backrest.
While it’s not a commercial machine, at this price point the Nordictrack 5.0 is a great option.
