Proform 440 ES Recumbent Bike Review – Pros:
Easy Step-Thru Design
This bike gets rid of the middle barrier that a lot of recumbent bikes used to have. So it’s much easier to get on and off the bike when you want to use it – without having to jump over a high barrier in the middle.
Large, Bright Backlit Console
The console is bright, backlit and easy to read. There’s a scrolling message board to lead you through the different workouts and a constant display of your resistance, time, distance, pulse and calories burned.
Padded Mesh-Back Style Seat For Cooler, More Comfortable Workouts
The seat on the Proform 440 bike is oversized with extra padding. The seat is also mesh, which lets the air circulate in and around your back to keep you cooler when you’re working out.
You can also used the hand crank to easily move the seat forward and back to can find the right pedal distance for your height.
iPod Dock with Charging Station
There’s an iPod dock with speakers in the console. So you can plug in your iPod and listen to your favorite tunes as you pedal.
There’s also a USB charging port for your devices – so you can charge them as you workout.
Add More Workouts with iFit Coach
This bike comes with the option to add iFit Coach if you want it. iFit basically turns your bike into your own personal fitness studio. It gives you a lot of ways to reach new goals and fight exercise boredom.
You connect with iFit online through your tablet and from there you can cycle famous trails all over the world – from the streets of Paris to the mountains of the Swiss Alps.

You can also take streaming high-energy cycling classes where instructors coach you through your workout.
Or track your fitness activity online to set new goals and see how far you’ve come. Basically there’s a lot you can do with iFit compatible bikes that you just can’t do with other bikes.

Tablet Holder Above the Console
There’s a place to put your tablet above the console. So you can watch your favorite shows, Netflix or movies as you pedal.
This is a small thing – but it can add a lot of entertainment to your workouts.
You can also, of course, use it to connect with iFit Coach and watch motivating cycling workouts or bike trails all over the world.
18 Pound Flywheel
A heavier flywheel helps to give you a smoother feeling ride, especially in between resistance transitions. While it’s not the largest flywheel out there, the 18 pound flywheel on this bike is quite decent – especially considering the price point.
Proform 440 ES Recumbent Bike Review – Cons
The Proform 440 ES recumbent does have a few things you should know before you buy. First of all the heart rate hand sensors are located in front of the console and not on the side of the bike seat.
So it’s a bit of a pain to reach up to get your heart rate reading.
Also while the bike is iFit compatible, you’ll need an online subscription to use iFit if you want to try it.
And if you want the full benefit of iFit (i.e. virtual reality workouts), you’ll need to connect through your tablet and watch the scenery that way – as it won’t show up on the console screen like it does for bikes like the Nordictrack VR25.
Bottom Line?
The Proform 440 ES is a bit simpler than other models – the console window is a bit smaller and it doesn’t carry some of the higher end bells and whistles of Proform’s other bikes.
But there is a reason it’s currently a bestseller. It comes in at a fantastic price – and it has all of the essentials that you need in a starter model. You also get some fun toys that don’t come with other most brands like the iFit option or the tablet holder.
