Schwinn 170 Upright Exercise Bike

The Schwinn 170 exercise bike is a super-affordable starter upright bike introduced by Nautilus a couple of years ago.

It comes with the console fan, online workout sync function, iPod dock and backlit console – features that older models did not have.

It also comes with Schwinn connect where you can sync your workouts online with the Schwinn connect option – or download your workouts to the myfitnesspal app.

Is the Schwinn 170 upright bike the right choice for you? Here’s a review of the pros and cons to help you decide:

The Basics:

Price: $499 + Free Shipping

Resistance: 25

Built-In Workouts: 29

Weight Capacity: 300 lbs

Schwinn 170 Review – The Pros:

Updated Dual-Track Console

The Console is larger and much improved over old Schwinn models. First of all, it’s backlit – which makes it easy to read your workout stats. There are 2 large windows that give you constant feedback on 13 different stats like time, distance, calories burned, etc.

There’s 29 different built-in workouts and the console will even track the information (height, weight, gender) for up to 4 users. This is handy (since you don’t have to re-enter the information every time you use the bike) and can give you more accurate feedback on calorie-burning.

Plus, there’s a built-in 3 speed fan that actually works pretty well (a lot of console fans don’t give you more than a light breeze) which can help keep you cool.

USB Charging Port

This port lets you plug in and play your iPod or other mp3 device. There are built-in speakers so you can enjoy listening to your favorite tunes as you workout.

You can also use the USB port to upload your workout stats to the Schwinn Connect online website. You can then track your workout progress over time. And if you have a fitnesspal account, you can even upload your workouts into your account there to integrate them with your daily activity goals.

Oversized, Padded, Cushioned Seat

The seat is also adjustable up and down as well as forward and back, so you can pick a position that’s most comfortable for your height.

Adjustable Handlebars

You can adjust the angle of the handlebars on the Schwinn 170 to suit your taste. Another bonus is the fact that the forearm rests are removable, giving you more ways to customize the workout.

Oversized Pedals – Upgrade on Older Models

The Schwinn 170 uses oversized pedals with toe straps and 3-piece pedal cranks. This is an upgrade on the lesser priced, older Schwinn upright bikes like the Schwinn 130 or A10 which only have 1-piece pedal cranks with standard pedals.

The problem with these older models was that often people would complain of their feet bumping up against the crank. So this feature alone makes the Schwinn 170 one of the better upright bikes in the Schwinn lineup.

Schwinn 170 Review – The Cons:

Short Warranty

The warranty on this bike only covers labor for 90 days – which is extremely short and doesn’t give you a lot of protection. Then again, it’s pretty standard for a bike at this price point.

Starter Bike

The Schwin 170 falls into the starter bike category, which means it isn’t going to give you the feel or finish of a commercial bike. There’s a few plastic parts and the unit itself is pretty light – only 63 pounds.

So it just won’t give you the stability of a mid-level or commercial grade bike. If you plan on heavy use of the bike you may want to find a higher-grade of bike like a Sole or a Nordictrack.

Bottom Line?

The Schwinn 170 upright bike is a huge improvement over past Schwinn upright models. It gives you a lot for comfort and entertainment  – from a cushioned seat and oversized pedals to online workout tracking and lots of built-in programs.

Is it a commercial grade bike? Definitely not. And if you’re planning on heavy use of your time, you may want to go with a more mid-level or commercial grade unit. But for this price point, the Schwinn 170 does give you some decent value.

Thanks for this – had this bike for over 5 years – it’s not fancy and the seat is a bit uncomfy – but it’s solid and good for the price. – Irv
