Schwinn Airdyne AD7 Bike – A Good Value For You?

Schwinn AD7 Bike

The Schwinn Airdyne AD7 is the premium model in the Schwinn Airdyne bike series.

It carries a few more bells and whistles than the AD6 bike including upgraded handle grips, improved console and a better seat adjust.

This is a very unique style of exercise bike.

The Airdyne is what’s called a “dual action” bike which means that you work both your legs and arms with this bike (giving you more calorie burning power than a regular upright exercise bike).

It’s also different in that the Airdyne AD7 also uses air resistance instead of eddy brake, digital resistance or tension control.

So is it a good choice for you?

Here’s a review of the Schwinn AD7 Airdyne bike to help you decide:

Schwinn AD7 Airdyne Review – the Pros:

Enhanced Upper Body Arm Bars

The upper body arm bars on this bike help to give you a total body workout – so you can burn more calories in a single workout session. Although the arms are fairly easy to move, you will still find yourself sweating from the whole body exertion here.

Plus the grips are enhanced and curved – giving you multiple positions to work from (unlike the AD6 model with standard grips). So you can work your arms from multiple different positions, toning them faster.

Unlimited Resistance

A common complaint with other types of bikes is that they don’t give you enough resistance to be challenging. After you’ve been using them for a while, you end up topping out at the highest resistance and there’s no room to grow.

You don’t get this problem with the Schwinn AD7 bike. With air resistance, the harder you pedal, the more resistance you get. So resistance is almost unlimited on this bike.

Improved Seat Adjust

The AD7 Airdyne has an upgraded seat with a bit more padding than the AD6. It also allows you to adjust the seat a little more forward and back (as well as up and down). So you can definitely find the most comfortable fit for your body.

It’s also great for multiple-user homes as everyone can find the best fit for them.

Optimized Fan for Lower Noise

Schwinn has also upgraded the main fan system here. A common complaint with old Airdyne bikes is that they could be loud – especially when you really pick up the pace.

Schwinn upgraded the AD7 Airdyne so that the fan is a bit quieter and you still get the high resistance levels that these bikes are known for.

Another bonus? You also get a nice breeze from the bike as you pedal to keep you cool.

Holds Up Well Over the Long Run

The Schwinn Airdyne was the first dual action bike introduced almost 20 years ago. Just the fact that Schwinn hasn’t discontinued it (only upgraded it) is a testament to how popular it is.

Many users say they’ve had their Airdyne for 10 years or more. Considering the price, this is quite a feat for such an affordable bike.

Heavier Than Other Models

The Schwinn Airdyne AD7 also has a heavier unit weight with a bit more stability than the AD6 model. It also has a higher user weight capacity. This means you get a more stable feel – and it’s especially great for heavy use over time.

Schwinn Airdyne AD7 Review – The Cons:

Non-Backlit Console

The console on this bike is not backlit – which is a bit surprising considering it’s the premium model. It can be hard to see your workout stats – especially if lighting is poor in your workout area (or you want to watch a good movie while cycling).

The console is also fairly simple showing you basic information. There are no iPod docks, no online tracking programs or Bluetooth options like you find with other bikes.

Not A Lot of Bells and Whistles

When you compare the Airdyne bikes in general to other upright bikes like the Nordictrack S15i for example – which gives you virtual reality training, incline and decline, built-in cycling classes etc, these bikes just seem to fall short.

While they are a classic bike, they haven’t really kept up with fitness trends and don’t give you a lot of bells and whistles that you can get with other bikes today.

Bottom Line?

The Schwinn Airdyne AD7 is a premium Airdyne bike with upgraded handlebars, a better seat adjust and upgraded console.

It also runs quieter than Airdyne bikes in the past, which is great if you have little ones in your household.

While it doesn’t give you some of the most current bells and whistles that other bikes carry, if you’re looking for a classic, overall body workout, the Airdyne AD7 is worth checking out.
