Schwinn AD6 Airdyne Review – the Pros:

Upper Body Arm Bars

These help to give you a total body workout – and thus burn more calories in a single workout session. Although the arms are pretty easy to move, you will still find yourself sweating from the whole body exertion here.

Unlimited Resistance

A common complaint with other types of bikes is that they don’t give you enough resistance to be challenging. After you’ve been using some of them for a year or so, you’re topped out at the highest resistance and there’s no room to grow.

You don’t get this problem with the Airdyne. With air resistance, the harder you pedal, the more resistance you get. So resistance is virtually unlimited on this bike.

Stay Cool While You Workout

The air resistance also has another bonus – you get a great fan-like breeze from the flywheel as you pedal. So it’s easy to stay cool while working out (who needs a console fan anyway?)

Holds Up Well Over the Long Run

The Schwinn Airdyne was the first dual action bike introduced almost 20 years ago. Just the fact that Schwinn hasn’t discontinued it (only upgraded it) is a testament to how popular it is. Many users say they’ve had their Airdyne for 10 years or more. Considering the price, this is quite a feat for such an affordable bike.

Can Rest Your Feet

Not many people realize this before they buy the Airdyne, but you can actually rest your feet while still using the upper body arms. So it’s a nice way to take a break if you’re getting a little overheated – and just work your upper body.

Basic, Non-Backlit Console

Even with the new upgrade from the AD4 to the AD6, Schwinn still has not upgraded the console to be backlit, which is surprising. It can be hard to see your workout stats – especially if lighting is poor in your workout area (or you want to watch a good movie while cycling).

The console is also fairly simple showing you basic information. There are no iPod docks, no built-in fitness programs or tracking programs like you find with other bikes.

Can Be Loud

If you really workout hard – the bike can get pretty noisy. It’s not bad if you’re just going at a normal speed. But it can pick up noise when you pick up your pace. It’s not annoyingly loud – just something you should be aware of.

Bottom Line?

The Schwinn Airdyne AD6 is a classic bike with some very distinct benefits – which is probably why it keeps selling year after year. You get unlimited resistance, total body workout (including arms) and a great cooling breeze while you ride it.

There are a few drawbacks in that you don’t get all the bells and whistles that other bikes give you and the console is not as bright as it could be. But if you just want a classic, wind-resistance exercise bike that won’t break the bank, then the AD6 is worth considering.
